Self Portrait
Standard 1: HS.1, HS.3
Standard 2: HS.1, HS.2
Standard 3: HS.4
In this project the student takes the final step of creating their own self portrait drawing in graphite pencil. Each student may use a digital photograph as their reference picture. Using the different tips and skills attained from drawing parts of the human face and head in their "pieces" assignment, each student strives to achieve as realistic a rendering of themself as possible.
Objectives:
Facial proportions rendered correctly
Three dimension rendered with shading and value
Hair is rendered with contrasts and proper directional movement
Composition fits onto the drawing surface in an aesthetically pleasing manner
Freehand, No Grid Examples
Portrait in Pieces
In this series of drawings, students will break down individual portions of the human face into manageable pieces. Drawing an entire portrait can be a daunting task that often overwhelms the beginning student, so this way they can gain some degree of mastery over elements that by themselves aren't too difficult, then put the pieces together in a manner that lends itself to more success. Students will create a binder of all portrait pieces for review and critique.

Circus Freak- Use your own creativity to create a new, visually interesting animal from the bodies and appendages of two others.
- There needs to be at least 3 separate and distinct animal parts
- - You may use any media of your choice!
- - If black and white, a full range of value should be included.
- - If color, avoid flat pre-packaged colors. Blend like you have been taught!
- Choose an animal “base” to use as the foundation for the rest of your drawing. This should be the main body that other parts are grafted onto.
- There should be at least one “primary” morphing element to the drawing. This means that there is a major change, such as a new head placed on to the body, four different legs placed onto the body, etc.
